Lockdown has been a challenging time for many musicians as most of our work has been cancelled and doesn't seem like it will get back to normal any time soon. My lovely friend Ben invited me to perform an outdoor, socially distanced Dvorak's New World Symphony in Greenwich Park last week. It was wonderful to perform again and the impromptu audience seemed to enjoy it too! You can read more about it here.
Performing the new bond song at the BRITs with Billie Eilish was an incredible experience. Hans Zimmer had arranged the music for strings, horns, trumpets and 4 low flutes (2 altos and 2 basses).
I had a wonderful time performing in Russia with the Paraorchestra as part of the UK -Russia year of Music organised by the British Council. This is a shot from our concert at The Garage Art Gallery in Moscow.

Army of Generals at Glastonbury!
I was lucky enough to take part in a video games concert at Glastonbury with the wonderful ensemble, Army of Generals. The weather was surprisingly good so there were no wellies in sight! I was involved in a performance with the RNS wind quintet as part of BBC music day where performances were heard all along Hadrian's Wall throughout the day. The quintet ended up being featured on BBC 1 O'Clock and 9 O'Clock news as well as BBC world service, BBC news 24 and the One Show so it was quite a day for us! The weather was beautiful if a little cold and it was definitely a memorable first visit to Hadrian's Wall.
I've just spent a few days at the University of Falmouth working on a research project called the Online Orchestra. It was fascinating to test new software which will enable musicians from rural areas of the UK to play chamber music over the Internet. Here is a picture of my studio for the last 2 days compete with the video screens of our conductor and the other musicians. Slightly serial experience but a lot of fun too! I've just returned from a fantastic tour to China with the RLPO. We had 7 concerts over 10 days and travelled to 8 different cities so there was not a huge amount of time to explore. However I saw some brilliant chinese musicians performing in the foyer of the National centre for the performing arts in Beijing where we had a concert that evening. It was so interesting to see non western music performed and to experience traditional chinese instruments performed to such a high standard.
I've just returned from a lovely week in Wales helping out with the brilliant Llangenny Flute Course ran by Sarah Newbold and Zoe Smith. I managed to sit in on some of the masterclasses and heard fabulous flute playing from everyone all week. Here is a picture of some chamber music rehearsals one evening, you couldn't wish for a better setting!
I had a great time today recording Bob Blakeley's new album at Air Studios. After watching him on the voice this years I was so pleased he has been offered a record deal as I couldn't believe that no one turned round for him on the show! The album is out in May.
Take a look at my favourite photo from our recent quintet photo shoot!
I've been spending a bit of time working in Scotland recently which has been lovely as I've had time to do lots of sightseeing as well. Here's a picture of Edinburgh Castle I took on a crisp, beautiful day in April.
Skiing in CanadaI've just got back from skiing in Canada for 10 days which has been amazing! I also took my flute into the local school while I was there and played to the children as being in such a remote part of Canada means there is not normally too much music on offer at school.
I'm buzzing after finding out I've made it through to the second round of the Royal Overseas League Music Competition. Roll on Monday for round 2! I've just had a great week in Edinburgh and Glasgow performing music by Debussy, Ravel and Takemitsu with the SCO. I also took a day out to visit Edinbugh Zoo and see the famous giant pandas. Heres a quick picture I took of the girl panda while I was there! I've just got back from a lovely weekend playing at the 'Essentially English' chamber music festival. So great to play lovely chamber music with such talented musicians.
I've just found out I've been offered an audition for the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Academy so will be travelling to Amsterdam later this month to audition!
